ඔවුන් යාන්ත්‍රික ඇප් රියදුරන් ( Uber, Pickme) මගීන් අරගැනීම අවහිර කරයි, මර්දනය කරයි, සමහරවිට පහරදෙයි.

මගීන් ඇප් මඟින් ගමනක් ගන්න උත්සාහ කරන විට, ඔවුන්ට මේ වාක්‍ය අසා ගත හැක:

“මෙතනින් ඒ ටැක්සිය ගන්න බෑ.”

“ඔය වාහනයට නගින්න එපා, ඔබට කරදර වෙයි.”

“ඇප් එක කැන්සල් කරන්න, අපි ඔබව ගෙනියන්නම්”

ඒ අනතුරුව ගාස්තුව සාමාන්‍යය ගාස්තුවට වඩා 2–3 ගුණක් අය කරයි. සමහරවිට මීටර් වෙනස් කර ඇත හෝ මීටර් නොවෙයි.

මෙය සංචාරකයන්ට පමණක් නොව, දේශීය ජනතාවටත් බලපායි.

මෙම මාෆියා කණ්ඩායම් මගින් ඇප් තුළින් රැකියාව කරන රියදුරන් බියගන්වා රැකියාව අහිමි කරනු ලබයි.

ඇතිවන ප්‍රතිඵල:

• මගීන් සහ රියදුරන් අතර භීතිය.
• සංචාරක වෙබ් අඩවි වල නරක සමාලෝචන, රටේ ප්‍රතිරූපයට හානි.
• සාධාරණ රියදුරන්ට වෙළඳාම අහිමි වීම.
• ගමනාගමන තේරීමේ නිදහස බලාත්කාරයෙන් අහෝසි වීම.

• ආරක්ෂිත කලාප — සියලු බලපත්‍රලත් රියදුරන්ට, පොලිසිය හෝ ප්‍රවාහන නිලධාරීන්ගේ නිරීක්ෂණය.
• ගාස්තු පැහැදිලි කිරීම — වාර්ෂිකව සනාථ කරන ලද මීටර්, පෙනෙන ගාස්තු පුවරු; මීටර් වෙනස් කිරීමේදී දැඩි දඩ.

• ශූන්‍ය-සහන ප්‍රතිපත්තිය — මර්දන, භීෂණය, පහරදීම එරෙහිව දැඩි දඬුවම්.

Stop Taxi & Tuk-Tuk Mafia Harassment — Fair Rides for All

For many passengers in Sri Lanka — both locals and tourists — the journey from the airport, a railway station, or a beach should be the start of an enjoyable trip. But for too many, that journey begins with fear, intimidation, and overcharging.

At places like Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo Fort Railway Station, Pettah Bus Terminal, and popular destinations such as Ella, Galle Fort, and Mirissa, organized groups of local taxi and tuk-tuk drivers operate like a mafia.
They watch the entrances and exits. They decide who can pick up passengers. And if an Uber, PickMe, Yogo, or other app-based driver arrives to collect a customer, they block the vehicle, threaten the driver, and sometimes physically assault them.

Passengers who try to book an app ride — to save money or because they trust the safety features — are often told by these groups:

• “You can’t take that taxi here.”
• “If you get in that car, you won’t be safe.”
• “Cancel that app ride — we’ll take you instead.”

Those who give in are charged two to three times the normal price. In some cases, taxi meters are tampered with or not used at all, making it impossible for passengers to know the real fare.

This is not just a tourist problem — locals face it too. Students, office workers, and families trying to get home are left feeling unsafe and powerless. App-based drivers — many of them ordinary men and women trying to earn an honest living — are bullied out of their jobs.

The result?

• Fear among passengers and drivers.
• Bad reviews on travel sites that damage Sri Lanka’s image.
• Lost business for honest drivers.
• A transport system where intimidation replaces choice.

We are calling for immediate national action:

1. Protected pickup zones at all major hotspots, monitored by police or transport officers, where all licensed drivers — app or street — can pick up passengers without fear.
2. Fare transparency: every vehicle must have a certified meter, checked annually, and display an official rate card.
3. Harassment hotline & app reporting: quick-response complaint channels for passengers and drivers.
4. Driver ID display: name, licence number, and fare rules inside every taxi and tuk-tuk.
5. Awareness campaigns: let the public and tourists know their rights and how to report abuse.
6. Zero tolerance: strict enforcement against harassment, threats, or violence toward any licensed driver.

Sri Lanka’s transport should be a symbol of hospitality, safety, and fairness.

Let’s end the mafia control of our streets and give passengers the freedom to choose.
